nbn have announced high-speed upgrades and multi-gigabit plans for all eligible customers are launching from September this year. This transformation to Australia’s broadband network will provide the necessary adjustments so you can enjoy even better internet services as the demand for internet increases.
What are the Changes?
Residential customers with FTTP and HCF connection types will gain the most from this upgrade as they will gain access to new nbn speed tiers. These new tiers will offer greater value with increased upload and download speed capacities.
Here is a breakdown on the new speeds that will be available.
These upgrades will offer improvements to internet activities such as 4K streaming, online gaming, video conferencing and file uploading. And even better, if households have multiple users and devices connected, they will see a great benefit to speeds.

Why the need for Change?
In recent years, internet usage has changed drastically as more Australians have started to stream more content, work from home and rely on smart technology. This increased usage has led to homes going from having 3-4 connected devices to around 25. These devices include phones, laptops, TVs and smart devices. With this increase, the amount of time Australian spend using the internet has averaged at 6 hours a day.
The changes coming will allow Australia’s nbn network to support the increased demand for internet with faster speeds and a more stable connection. These upgrades include increased access to Fibre to the Premises connections, network capacity improvements, and the new speed tiers to provide better value and performance.
How you can prepare to benefit the most from the changes
Most of the work to get your nbn upgraded will be done by us, but there are a few small changes you can make to get the best benefits of the faster speeds and improved performance.
Upgrade to an FTTP connection
If your household currently has a FTTN or FTTC connection, it might be a good idea to upgrade to FTTN so you can benefit from the upgrades coming. nbn is actively expanding FTTN availability across Australia and your address may be available for a free upgrade. Check your address or reach out to our team to find out if you are eligible.
We recommend getting on top of this now to avoid any extended installation waiting periods as the demand to upgrade increases.
In home optimisations
Your router is key to the speed benefits you get from your new nbn service. We recommend upgrading if you have been holding on to your old router as it may limit your speed as your demand changes. If you are new to Arctel, sign up and select our standard router to support your internet service.
Newer routers are more advanced and have better Wi-Fi technologies. The higher the generation number, the better the router will be at managing high speeds and demand
Have a look at the generations below, nbn recommends that internet users have a router that is wifi 6 of above.
Wi-Fi generation | Typical Maximum Speeds | Approximate year of release |
Wi-Fi 7 | Above 1 Gbps | 2024 |
Wi-Fi 6 | Up to 1 Gbps | 2019 |
Wi-Fi 5 | Up to 500 Mbps | 2013 |
Wi-Fi 4 | Up to 100 Mbps | 2009 |
